Censor Board has done a number of censorship fiasco in the tenure of Pahlaj Nihalani. From demanding 89 cuts in “Udta Punjab” to removing all dialogues that referred to sexual intercourse “Jab Harry Met Sejal” he got famous for all his actions. His image of being too conservative and cultural was criticized by film makers and audiences alike. After a series of absurd decisions and a kind of revolt by Bollywood, lead to his dismissal.New CBFC chairman is talented & famous lyricist Prasoon Joshi.
The new CBFC chief will have responsibility to maintain balance between the sanitized version of Bollywood and freedom of expression of film makers. We as audience also have our own demands from him. Here’s our list of expectations:
Good intention is the best beginning
Though his first comment as the new CBFC Chief is “good intention is the best beginning”, we hope it’s good for the freedom of expression and is not too binding on the viewers. All we want is good experience in form of a realistic movie.
Truth of the society
We want nothing against movies dealing with true problems like Udta Punjab. Bollywood already is far behind in making good reality movies. We as viewers need more of such movies. We seriously hope CBFC under leadership of Prasoon realizes this and brings in the desired change and courage to show the unfiltered truth.
We agree that culture is important but showing the reality in true sense is also important. A scene with censored reality is not justice to the audience as it hides the real struggle behind it. It took more than two years for “Lipstick under my burkha” to get clearance from CBFC (with A certificate). I hope from now on censor board will issue”A certificate” in its true sense not to cut the real substance from movies.
No political interference
Political movies or movies that align themselves to poltical causes are face criticism & wrath of censor board. We expect neutrality from CBFC now. Let us decide which cause to join (Toilet: Ek prem katha) or which story to believe (Indu Sarkar). Strangely, Indu Sarkar found it difficult to make it to the theaters and Akshay was regularly questioned about BJP’s role in Toilet: Ek prem katha.
Movies like Bajirao Mastani always struggle to release smoothly. Distorting facts and history is a regular reason of such hurdles. Deciding on behalf of society is unfair, let the audience decide what is good for them & what is not. Recreating history involves art of Strong storytelling, so minor deviations from facts is inevitable. After all such movies keeps history alive which is otherwise dying in the books.
We do not have much of expectations from Prasoon. We just want him to work without aforesaid pressures, to streamline and smoothen the release of movies. Lets make Bollywood stand tall on the world map & make it compete with best in the world.
Good Luck to Mr. Prasoon Joshi!
