‘Padmawati’ otherwise called ‘Padmavati’ is a Hindi film that is set to be released soon. Of late the release of the film has faced a lot of controversy and even a Court challenge at the Supreme Court of India. The film is known to be based on the poem ‘Padmavat’, written in 1540 AD by a Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Otherwise, the history of Padmavati is long and dates back to 1303 AD.
This is the story of a legendary Hindu Rajput queen Padmavati who is known to be exceptionally beautiful and with a strong sense of justice. She was the pride of the kingdom of Chittor – a well developed city in Rajasthan, northwest of India. The queen is known to have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect her dignity. The legend of her beauty dates to the reign of Sultan of Hindustan – Allaudin Khilji, a tyrant fixated on anything exceptionally beautiful. The whole story is that of honor, valour and obsession.
The massive controversy started when Karni Sena led fringe Rajput groups in accusing Bhansali of distorting facts and wrongly portraying the Queen of Chittor, Rani Padmini. There were rumors of a certain romantic relationship between Padmavati (Rani) and Alauddin Khilji (Sultan) played by Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh respectively. The rumors sparked protests that gathered momentum with every passing day. This lead to Karni Sena calling a nationwide ban on the film’s release. They even declared crores of bounty to behead Bhansali and Padukone.
To make matters worse, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) refused to certify the historic film.
Several Rajput outfits and politicians have also accused the Director of the film of “distorting historical facts” in the movie. The movie stars Deepika Padukone in the title role, Shahid as Maharawal Ratan Singh, and Ranveer Singh as Sultan Alauddin Khilji. Bhansali and Padukone received death threats for being part of the film.
The Film Release Date
Shahid Kapoor who plays one of the characters in the film, is hoping for an early 2018 release now. When asked about the current status of the project, Shahid said, “I am sure we will have clarity by the end of this year about when the film is releasing. But we want it to release as soon as possible.” The 36 year old actor was speaking at the red carpet of Zee Cine Awards. Shahid also acknowledged that although there has been a lot of controversy around “Padmavati” it is such a special film.
When asked if controversy would dampen his image, Shahid said he was excited to be part of a memorable film. He added that the year has been one of the most memorable in his career. Further, he reiterated that the film will be a historical marvel in the history of Indian cinema. Shahid also expressed his anxiety and eagerness for the release of the movie.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’ has been facing trouble for long now. Will the makers finally see light at the end of the tunnel? Hopefully, the movie will hit the silver screen as soon as the Censor Board gives their final verdict. The producers are waiting for the certificate from CBFC for them to decide the release date. Meanwhile, January 5th or 12th are the proposed dates.
A reliable source informed one of the leading dailies that there has been no official intimidation from the producers. “Whenever they release it, we will be happy giving them the promised number of screens,” a source said. It’s also worth noting that there are no major box office releases around the tentative release dates. Does that mean good business for ‘Padmavati’? The publicity it has received so far has made up for the lack of time to promote the movie. The makers of the film are yet to announce an official statement.
