Raid Review: Ajay Devgn is right on corruption money

Raid is a well timed movie releasing when Indians are vouching against corruption and money hoarding. The movie set in 80s is about a well planned raid by a non-sycophant incorruptible officer, Amay Patnaik (Ajay Devgn). The antagonist is a politico-business goon Tauji (Saurabh Shukla). With the exceptional cast of these two, Raid on Tauji’s hoarded black money is surely an imprinting raid on audiences mind.

A morally responsible IT officer is repeatedly transferred as punishment for his principles in a corrupt system. The movie drags initially to portray Devgn as a man of principles and the how well he is supported by his wife (Ileana D Cruz) in his endeavors. His latest posting in Lucknow and his idiosyncrasies to catch the tax evaders brings entertainment to the table.

A telephonic tip off about Tauji’s black money and a well executed Raid ensues. Devgn’s team along with police raids Tauji’s property in search of hoards of stashed currency and gold bars. The team finds it or backs down by the influential forces of political leaders and armed goons backing Tauji is a guess to be made if you are not watching this one. A tip though, Bollywood movies end on good notes.. :P. The melodramatic climax make us realize it’s a movie based in 80s.

Ajay Devgn is known for his officer roles where he can keep a staunch face while delivering blunt dialogues like in Singham and Singham Returs. But Raid offers something more from him, a sense of fear and insecurity prevails in his actions. Realism is added when polices support is demanded by him and the IT officer is not hailed as Macho-man. Saurabh Shukla is always amazing with whatever roles he ought to play. Be it comedy, a loving father or shrewd politician, he never disappoints. Ileana is good as a supporting wife but has limited screen presence to make a mark.

Raid is a good watch overall, a slow start but a catching pickup with a slight over the top ending. I give Raid, 3 out of 5 stars.
